One of the city’s most iconic sights. A trip up to the top is worth the journey – if you’re feeling up to the hike this is a popular activity for visitors and locals alike. If not then just hop in the cableway to take in the stunning views at your leisure.

Hit the Beach

Cape Town is home to some truly incredible beaches and there’s a great laidback surfer culture native to the city. You don’t have to ride the waves to enjoy the beaches though – they’re perfect for an afternoon stroll, splashing in the sea or lazing around on the sands.

The affluent suburb of Clifton boasts 4 great beaches, palm-lined Camps Bay is close to trendy boutiques and cafes and a little further from the city is Bloubergstrand.

These stunning botanical gardens are a world-class example of natural beauty. It’s home to more than 7,000 plant species and offers more than beautiful garden walks. Take a guided tour, relax in the Tea Rooms or enjoy an open air gig in the amphitheatre.

Meet the Penguins

Head to Boulder’s Beach an hour’s drive outside the city to meet the local populations of African penguins. This is a protected colony of an endangered species so you have to pay a conservation fee to visit – and it’s important to show respect to these wild animals and keep a bit of distance. But it’s also a great experience and fun thing to do during your holidays to Cape Town.

Visit Robben Island

Step into history with a trip to Robben Island; while much of South Africa’s past is dark and troubled it is important to learn about it and to pay respects. National hero Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years imprisoned on Robben Island – hop on the ferry for a guided tour.
