Spain’s beloved Costa del Sol is one of our most popular destinations for family holidays. Tons of Irish families flock there every year and it’s easy to see why. We’ve put together a quick guide on some of the major things to do while you’re there.

Come to the Coast!

Marbella Beach

Why families love the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a perennial favourite among families.

For one thing getting there is simple. Direct flights from Dublin to Malaga take about 3 hours, making travelling with kids easier (less time to keep them entertained on the flight!) and forming one of the key reasons the Costa del Sol is such a popular family holiday destination.

The beaches and blue waters are a key draw, as is the range of family-friendly resorts and hotels, many of them with amazing facilities that make entertaining the kids a doddle while still getting some well-earned rest and relaxation in yourself.

Build sandcastles on one of the incredible beaches

With over 100 beaches to choose from along 150km of stunning coastline, the Costa del Sol’s strips of sand and sea are a major draw for families of all kinds. From spectacular sands stretching for miles, to serene coves away from the hustle and bustle, you can choose a beach to suit your family. Best of all, many beaches have the coveted Blue Flag meaning you can rest assured that they’re safe to let your kids splash around.

Water Park

Visit one of the many theme parks, water parks, nature reserves and more

This park of Spain is known for its many amazing theme parks and water parks. Whether you’d like the thrill of a hi-speed rollercoaster or an epic slide, you’ll find great options for a day out nearby, wherever you choose to stay in the Costa del Sol.

  • Tivoli World Theme Park – just 20 mins south of Malaga
  • Parque Acuático Mijas (Mijas Costa)
  • Aqualand Waterpark in Torremolinos
  • Costa Water Park in Fuengirola
  • BioParc Fuengirola
  • Crocodile Park Torremolinos
  • Selwo Safari in Estepona
  • Butterfly Farm in Benalmádena
  • Jardin de las Aguilas, Benalmadena
  • Sea Life Aquarium in Benalmádena

Castillo de Colomares

Soak up some culture & history

Family holidays in the Costa del Sol are about more than just built up resorts and tourist hotspots. There’s also plenty of historical charm and authentic local character waiting to be explored.

  • See the Castillo de Colomares, a fairytale palace in Benalmádena
  • Take in the ancient history of Granada
  • See stunning Cordoba, with its mix of Roman and Moorish architecture
  • Walk along the charming cobblestone streets on Nerja
  • Visit the beautiful Seville
  • Visit amazing museums like the Interactive Museum of Music and many more

Cable Car Benalmadena

And a few other highlights!

The Costa del Sol has plenty of beaches, coastlines, resorts, towns, cities and food to keep any family occupied. As well as that, you’ll find tons of fun activities to suit all tastes. Here’s a few to think about!

  • Take a ride in the cable car in Benalmádena – take in some spectacular views
